CHAPTER 27

From the Inside Out

When the pizza arrived, they all gathered just off of the mats, each one of them still smiling. Paper plates and napkins were passed around the small circle, and when the stack reached Catherine, she looked at it curiously. “We have these?”

Brody grinned, just slightly where his dimple wasn’t quite showing. “Napkins? Pretty sure we have them at every meal there, Lady Catherine.”

Catherine’s eyebrow was raised, even though she felt a grin coming on as well. “Ha. Ha.”

As Brody opened up the pizza box, he stole a glance over at her. “Greta picked them up.”

Catherine nodded, understanding immediately. “For when you have to hide food?” Her question was asked softly, so the younger children wouldn’t hear her over their own conversation.

She watched as Brody’s eyes were drawn to her lips, but he averted them quickly. “Um ... yeah. Yeah, it’s... they can just be thrown away, you know? Don’t have to get them washed and put away.” He was grinning once more, as if he was wanting to dispel the tension. “Unless of course you really want to.”

This time, Catherine couldn’t stop her grin from forming, and it only faltered when she reached for a slice of pizza and her fingers accidentally brushed against his. “Sorry,” she murmured as she pulled back, the same time he did.

Brody gestured towards the box with his head, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he did so. “Go ahead.”

“Thank you.”

She was fairly certain the expression on his face was one of surprise. It made sense; just a few short weeks ago, Catherine wouldn’t have muttered a single apology to anyone. No, a few short weeks ago, Catherine would have insisted everyone wait for her, wait on her. She’d been convinced these were things she was entitled to.

That day, though, her eyes wandered over to Tyler and Sam who sat smiling, waiting patiently.

And she smiled in return.

“You two go first,” she said, and she sat back as they happily took their pizza, their excited chatter again filling the gym. When she glanced back at Brody, his smile was gone, his expression contemplative. It caused her own smile to fall, and she silently took her slice of pizza before she sat back to give him room.

Catherine kept her eyes on her own food, carefully picking the mushrooms off and setting them to the side. Once she was sure she’d removed them all, she took her first bite, savoring the food considered so unhealthy for her. A soft satisfied sigh left her, and she heard Brody chuckle. Her cheeks heated slightly as she asked, “What?”

He held his hands up in defense. “Nothing, nothing at all.” His eyes dropped to her plate, then locked with hers. “Don’t like mushrooms?”

She wrinkled her nose. “Ugh, no. They’re gross.”

“But you didn’t say anything.”

It sounded more like a statement, but because she’d taken another bite, she could only shake her head in response. Once she swallowed, she said, “Everyone else wanted them. I can pick them off.
